Pop art is an art movement that started in the late 1950s, and uses imagery from popular culture. Television influenced the way people viewed the world became the subject matter for pop artists. Detaching images from the media from any time or place, then became interchangeable parts that made up the new reality. Pop artists developed commercial art techniques to cultivate impersonality, and make a feeling of mass-production. As in photoscreening, billboards, and printing flat colored areas in dots. Two famous pop artist were Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Warhol wanted nothing more than fame and wealth, while Lichtenstein wanted his art to look impersonal based on the impersonality of mass culture.
Nevertheless the biggest events of the 1960s affected pop art in many ways. Such as Marilyn Monroes death affected Andy Warhols series “Marilyns”, by the repetition of her portrait robbing her of any existence beneath the paper-thin image. Also the US sending troops affected a silkscreen from the “Car Crash” series, which constitute languages of art and mass media. The assassination of JFK resulted in Rosenquist repainting “President Elect”.
