Phonics Worksheet

Student Work Samples The first piece of work I have gathered from Kayson’s classroom teacher is a morning phonics worksheet. Each morning when the students arrive at the classroom they are instructed to complete their morning work while they are eating their breakfast. During this time, the classroom paraprofessional assists the students and the teacher tries to complete individual reading/spelling assessments. This phonics worksheet was given in late April as a review worksheet. On this phonics worksheet, the student is asked to look at the picture and fill in the correct beginning digraph to complete the word for the picture. In this assignment, the student is asked to imagine that a dinosaur is living in their backyard and describe what that would be like. In this assignment, the student has creative freedom to select which kind of dinosaur the story is about and what their dinosaur likes to eat, play with, etc. An entire unit of fiction and non-fiction read-aloud lessons on dinosaurs prefaced this assignment. Students were already given other writing assignments that assessed their knowledge of different dinosaurs and, therefore, this assignment was more aimed to assess overall student …show more content…
Kayson’s work seems really rushed and lacks planning and details. As the instructor, I would encourage Kayson to complete a brainstorming map before starting the written portion of a narrative. This would allow Kayson to think of many things to write about before starting his draft. I would also encourage Kayson to write more than one draft before turning in his final copy. I believe that adding additional steps to the process would improve the thoughtfulness in Kayson’s work as well as discourage him from rushing through his writing too
