In the article “War of Words,” by Trish Crawford she wrote about a couple of methods to learn English words, such as phonics and whole language. Phonics is one of the oldest ways in teaching someone new words, and was first introduced into the school system in the early nineteen hundreds. Phonics is where one uses sound and symbol relationships to figure out the word parts, and then puts them together to form words. Furthermore, the word epic is used in a lot of video games like role playing games (RPGs) and massive multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs), and even first person shooters (FPS). Epic, in this case, is used to describe the rarity of an item. Additionally, it can also be used to express how great an achievement was, good or bad. For instance, when one scores the winning kill shot, or when someone finally finds the weapon that they have been farming for weeks on end. When one thinks of epic, the first thing that comes to mind is something grand, something bigger than life its self. With the word epic it should bring joy and excitement in knowing that entertainment will ensue. Yet now a day’s, the youth of America have warped the meaning of the word; in such a way, that the word epic is used to describe how big someone has messed up. American youth have coined the phrase ‘epic fail’ to describe both big and small misfortunes. Furthermore, American society’s over use of the word epic has helped diminish the meaning of the word. It is also important to note how the word is used, in some instances, some words can bring much joy to everyone hearing it; while for some it might bring on panic and fear. Like the word dog; if you like dogs this word brings up happy thoughts, but if you were attacked by a dog as a child those thoughts would be completely different. Ultimately, it is up to the individual and their past experiences that will determine how a word will affect

In each literary and folk epic there are characters called epic heroes, epic heroes can be seen as superhuman because of their outstanding achievements but what makes the plot is that they are on a larger than life quest. Along the way there is major conflict, like fear, battles and bloodshed. Achilles from The Iliad written by Homer, Beowulf from Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel and Gilgamesh from Gilgamesh retold by Herbert Manson all are epic heroes and in some ways very similar like their bravery and god-like strength but in other ways they are different. In the Table 2.5, it would seem that it is translated precisely, yet there are some words changed, thus the idea becomes different than it should be. Using an idiom with the similar meaning but different form should sound very natural in the target language. In Sweeney Todd, the translators managed to achieve a different rendition of the musical piece by using Lithuanian idioms and sayings. In the first example of the table, Lithuanian common saying feels more natural than it would be rendered word-by-word. Thus, in the second example, the last line is paraphrased but the meaning has still not changed.…

Melba Pattillo Beals uses language in Warriors Don't Cry that gets her story across easily. She uses powerful words during the extreme parts of her story, and she uses relaxed words during the normal parts, which means she did not sugar coat her story. Her book is also different from others who write about themselves because it is a memoir, not exactly an autobiography. She tells the memories of her life, and that makes the tone of the book to be real and just like a teenage girl's mind. Therefore, her language can be as unique as she wants, because it's her story.…
