And how would that change have affected the outcome? Tension and emotions were high throughout the strike. The presence of these elements make the handling of such a conflict even more difficult. There are a few changes to the process that I believe would have improved the end result for both parties involved. To begin with, Phelps Dodge should have operated on good faith as their opponents were. Their decision to deceive the union broke any trust the members had for Phelps Dodge and the negotiating process. Furthermore, as violence crept in and escalated, each party should have taken a step back to reevaluate their position and pull in the reigns. However, I will say that I don’t think Phelps Dodge cared about the escalation. They were so narrowed on their primary focus, which was to bring down the union. I don’t believe they gave much thought to what they did to achieve that goal. Furthermore, as Phelps Dodge portrayed the union members and their wives as violent troublemakers and violation of civil liberties introduced themselves, I believe the union should have hired a publicist. Perhaps there were not funds for this, but it would have shifted public opinion in their favor and put pressure on Phelps Dodge and the government offices aiding their …show more content…
The damage left in the aftermath is long lasting. Lives are forever altered. Through all the trials and tribulations, the suffering and sacrifice, there were no winners in the outcome. Each side experienced loss. “Transformation negotiates both solutions and social change initiatives” (Lederach, 2003, p. 39).
