I. Attention step: A. How many of you think marijuana is dangerous? Now, how many of you think marijuana should be legalized? Well, according to a poll done by CBS News, they found out that most Americans, at 56% believe marijuana should be legalized (Lee, 2016). This is the highest it’s ever been and it’s an increase from last year. B. Solution or Satisfaction step: A. The most obvious way you can help is by voting yes on marijuana legalization this November on the 2016 California ballot. Additionally, you can also help out in a couple of other ways. B. 1. So the first way you can help out is by donating money to marijuana reform organizations such as NORML and the Georgia Care Project. 2. The second way is by donating your time to take part in public protests and events. 3. The third way is simply doing what teenagers nowadays do best. Go on social media and share posts that educate people on facts about marijuana. 4. The fourth way is signing the petition calling for the legalization of marijuana. C. Marijuana legalization is not only the right thing to do, but is also the smart thing to do. Marijuana is now legalized for recreational and medical use in only four states in America and those states are Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. It has been a great success in these states especially in Colorado and ill tell you why. According to Yahoo News after four years of legalizing marijuana arrests went down, DUI’s slightly lowered, the rise of the use of marijuana with adults rose, and people were more likely to mention marijuana in health records and surveys after legalization (Stabelford, 2016). Don’t forget that Colorado generated almost $70 million in marijuana taxes in 2014 (Basu, 2015). E. Now some might say “marijuana is a drug that is dangerous and will ruin people’s brains” or “marijuana legalization will just cause more crime”, but most of these arguments are proved to be wrong. According to the DEA they found that no deaths have occurred from marijuana use unlike tobacco which is legal and kills millions of people each year (DEA, 2011). Like I said earlier, Colorado has had a decrease in crime ever since legalizing marijuana so there is no evident proof it causes more crime.
