Following World War I, in 1919, the Versailles Conference, including the discussion of the Treaty of Versailles, in which America’s response was negative, took place between the allied nations and ultimately led to World War II. The Conference involved 32 nations in Paris, France. The conference didn’t include Germany, even though they eventually signed it, but more because they didn’t have a choice. Each person who attended the conference had separate ideas and inputs. The final treaty had 15 parts and 440 articles included. The Treaty was a way to conquer lasting peace. But was “peace” reached? Even though there were 32 nations participated in the conference, there were four people that became known as the “Big Four” that were the main leaders of the convention and these four people were Woodrow Wilson, George Clemenceau, David Lloyd George, and Vittorio Orlando. Woodrow Wilson presented some points that were very crucial to the meeting. They are known as Wilson’s Fourteen Points. Within these fourteen points, there were three main subjects he discussed and they were disarmament, land redistribution, and the League of Nations. Disarmament, or the cutback of the size or equipment of an army, was addressed to help the safety of the people. Disarmament is specifically mentioned in the fourth point of the fourteen. Wilson states that “armaments will be reduced to the lowest point consistent with domestic safety”, which means that as much as possible, there will be little amount of armies and less invasions of people’s property.
