Preventing Obesity Epidemic In America

When it comes to obesity, America is at the top of the list. Obesity rates have been increasing every year, and every year more people die from obesity related diseases. The basis for this epidemic is obvious, all you have to do is take a look around you. Fast food restaurants are located on every block, advanced technology has convinced humans that they are no longer needed when it comes to hard labor, which unfortunately has made Americans more lazy; the levels of stress people gain due to this major transformation have increased. Stress is a major factor when it comes to weight gain, and excessive consuming of unhealthy carbohydrates. All these fast food places serve similar foods; foods that are precooked, frozen foods, which are usually thawed out by boiling in hot oil (TeenInk). With the easy access to restaurants, people find it more convenient and cheaper to eat from one of the unhealthiest restaurants. Since obesity became a national epidemic, thats when the government realized that they have done very little to avoid this issue. Fast food industry may have changed the type of oil they use, but that’s not enough because people still continue to devour these greasy foods. They should ban fast food commercials from TV because those are what saturate our society. Kids want to eat anything that is presented to them, and parents allow it because it 's cheaper than to cook at home. Jane E. Brody stated that after Dr. Gortmaker and his team completed their research they came up with the conclusion that ‘ “Marketing of food and beverages is associated with increasing obesity rates and is especially effective among children,” ’ (42). Advertising is one problem, but the prices of these junk foods are also a major problem. In short, the prices for fast food are cheaper than those of healthy restaurants which deters people away from eating healthy. Stress can come from many different sources such as family, or money problems. In the article, The Link Between Stress and Obesity, Bonnie Taub-Dix, a weight loss expert points out that "When you eat carbohydrates, it raises the body 's serotonin levels...Serotonin is the body 's feel-good chemical” (Thompson). Thompson agrees with Taub-Dix when he mentions that it is not [surprising] that people under stress don’t tend to make smart food choices (Thompson). Many stressed people do tend to eat more than usual, and they usually choose to eat unhealthy fast food because it is more convenient for them. Finding out ways to relax or perform relaxing activities is essential to one’s health.
