I grew up in a nameless small town that was destroyed by the russian war machine. When they came they destroyed anything they wanted to and killed anyone in their way. They destroyed half the town on a whim and killed anyone over the age of 30 so we wouldn't be a threat later. After that they took any food they could carry and burned the rest, leaving the town with a message we would regrow the provisions and provide food for their army or there would be wholesale slaughter and anyone who left would be slowly tortured and then killed.

To the south there were grasslands as far as the eye can see and to the east was the largest city i had ever seen. As we started walking towards the city we noticed that we couldnt see the town from the outside, with the only indication that it existed was a sloped dirt colored wall with a dim light coming from the hole underneath it. But as we entered the city things changed very quickly. The bumpy uneven ground became flatter and made of pavement instead of sand, and small buildings became skyscrapers with large screens making up most of the siding. On those screens a constant feed of news came, however they said preposterous things such as the russians being wiped out and the russian controlled towns were all set free, even though I had just came from a russian controlled town.
