After quieting my mind, I opened my eyes and looked around the park. I saw the trees with their bright green leaves, people walking, and people talking. It made me think of children and how they are innocent and pure. With this sense of delight, I held the photo mat up to the slide, closed one eye and saw a picture worth taking. Without the frame, however, I did not see the potential, in what was directly in front of me. The photo mat blocked out anything not within in its borders. This made the image sharper and clearer. Looking though the frame I was more aware of the background, consisting of many small wood chips, big bushy trees, and a light blue sky with white splotches of cloud.
Out of the corner of my eye I spot a couple walking on the sidewalk pushing their child in a stroller. Placing the frame over the family I noticed that the trees were very prominent in the picture, as well as, the wooden bench next to me. That, however, did not take away from the potential picture, but greatly added to it. I would not have seen it though if it were not for the photo mat and its restrictive view.
This assignment has made me want to look at my environment with a more open set of eyes. So as I made my way back to campus I tried to envision everything I passed within the borders of an invisible photo mat. To be the best photographer that I can be, I first need to be able to see like a photographer and visualize the possible photographs, taking into account all that would be within the borders of the frame, because even the little things can make a huge
