Personal Narrative: A Career As A Residential Real Estate Agent

From the day I was born, I was meant to be a residential real estate agent. At less than a week old, I was drug to my parent’s workplace, a small, family owned real estate firm. As my parents divorced and were both left as single parents and real estate agents, it was very common for them to include me in their work responsibilities. Each of them were forced to take me along while showing endless properties to clients. Through constantly being immersed in the everyday practices of the field, I have been intrigued by real estate and have possessed a business mindset my entire life. As an agent, you are responsible for marketing properties, showing properties, and communicating with a wide variety of people. An agent must not only communicate with their clients, but also lending institutions and attorneys. As a third party mediator, I will be able to coordinate and negotiate a deal between both parties. To do so, I will have to communicate with others in a very efficient manner that utilizes both active listening and assertiveness as a leader. Another vital skill to be successful as a real estate agent, is the skill of persuasion. My persuasion skills have been applied through my extensive practices as a car salesman at a local auto dealership. For a car salesman, the most difficult part of the job is balancing persuasion and being overly assertive. As a car salesman, I tried to be very informative and market the vehicle, while also giving customers the space and time they needed to make a decision. Through trial and error over a span of two and half years, I was able to develop a successful method of persuasion in which I placed an emphasis on active listening and respect for my customers. Persuasion is a vital skill within the field of real estate, because of the natural indecisiveness of people when it comes to making major life and financial decisions. As a human, I believe it is my responsibility to help others through applying my skills in an efficient manner. As real estate is a field that involves complex transactions and requires knowledge of laws that ordinary citizens do not understand, an agent is responsible for comprehending and efficiently communicating the details to their client. A real estate agent must be able to identify not only the general knowledge level of their client, but also their client’s knowledge of the real estate process. Once the agent is aware of the client’s knowledge, it allows them to better serve their needs. For instance, some clients may be completely uninformed of the process and need full guidance to make such an important financial decision. To properly serve clients in the field of real estate, an agent must be able to facilitate the necessary resources to simplify the complex transactions of the process.
