The day before the hurricane was going to visit Houston, grocery stores were packed full of customers stocking up on ice, coolers, dry foods, bottles of water, flashlights, batteries, and even generators. However, some people were without power for weeks and had to go out to eat, or stay at the homes of family members or friends. My family was one of the lucky ones because we got our power back by Sunday night. We were able to survive from Saturday morning to Sunday evening by my mom being creative and crafty with our meals. Our refrigerator was still cold inside, so we left the few items we had in there. When we did get food and drinks out, we made sure to open and close the doors quickly so the cool air would remain in the refrigerator. We made cold cut sandwiches and my mom was able to cook several meals for us by lighting a match and turning on the gas on the stove (this could be dangerous, so be very careful!). We were also lucky because our water was still working. However, after several days our neighborhood advised us to limit our toilet flushing because the electricity went out for our sewage system. Although my family was successful with living without power, we could hear many generators humming away at our neighbor's houses; I guess living without electricity is not for everyone. (Should this be a concern?) I found the only real drawback to living without power or any sense of "modern normality" was the boredom; I think it was difficult because I had to stay inside my house for two days. Fortunately, I did find various ways to pass the time as I played with my son, wrote in a journal for a class, and read, just like in the good ol'
