Paul Cezanne's Influence On The Large Bathers

Paul Cézanne was born in 1839 and was a Post-Impressionist French painter. His work contributed to the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavor to a new world of art in the 20th century (“Paul Cézanne”, 2016). Cézanne worked on his painting “The Large Bathers” for seven years, which remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1906. It is often considered Cezanne’s finest work (“The Bathers (Cézanne)”, 2016). Cezanne aimed to disregard current trends and give a timeless quality to his work. Two upcoming artists, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, is said to be influenced by this painting.
In 1906, Henri Matisse finished the Bonheur de Vivre, or the “Joy of Life”, which seems to be closest to Cezanne’s image of bathers,

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

There is a stigmata in the Lili pad brush strokes and a legato in the lines of seaweed and willow branches. Claude Monet captures a fluid motion of an impressionist in his painting of the Water Lilies. He mesmerizes his viewers with a flat plane of space and depth. When beholding Monet’s paused glimpse of time in real life versus a reproduction, one perceives vast differences of thoughts, details and emotions. Through a comparison of the original and reproductions of…

The painting Large Reclining Nude by Henri Matisse involved lots of experimentation to arrive at the final product. I believe that the significance of documenting the 22 photographs of the painting various stages was to emphasize the thought process of producing a final artwork. Matisse experimented different ways to present the artwork, such as by changing the woman’s position and background patterns, until he created the last painting. He documented to see the changes he made each stage and see how else he could alter the painting, until he was satisfied with the end result. The documentation of the series of photographs allowed Matisse to visualize other altercations and different methods to present the painting.…

Cimabue and Rogier van der Weyden’s works of art deal with the same subject matter and medium, but offer distinct perspectives and analysis to the viewer. Both paintings were created within 150 years of one another so the variances in visual composition of the paintings depict how rapidly art transformed. The Cimabue’s painting is a little earlier (completed in 1280) and van der Weyden’s painting was completed between 1435 and 1440, meaning that the visual elements and composition are varied because these time periods signaled a brilliant change in art.…
