The idea of patriotism is an integral and fundamental word that describes one’s love for their country and a way to express their right to speech. However, the word is being manipulated to justify the wrongdoings of many people. Patriotism is a word that is changed and manipulated to fit the beliefs of others and varies among everyone. To me patriotism is simple, patriotism means showing love for one’s own country. However, the word patriotism has changed according the era, but, currently, the word is being used by white supremacists and racists all over the United States to “justify” their inappropriate and terrorist actions. Ever since a young age, I have never cared about the idea of patriotism. I showed my respect by standing for the Pledge and the National Anthem. The good thing about patriotism is that is can spread messages and demonstrates the different views and opinions of people. However, recently, in multiple news stories the word patriotism is being used in derogatory ways. As a result, I, occasionally, won’t stand for the national anthem or I will stand but not say any of the lyrics. In this way, I show my patriotism by voicing my own opinion without using any words. Similar to the actions of Colin Kaepernick, a renowned football player who kneels during the anthem, kneeling is a way to protest the current events, against them.
