b) History of the religion: Modern day Jehovah Witnesses were founded in the late 19th century. A small group of Bible students began analyzing the Bible and comparing it to doctrines taught by the churches. Then, they began publishing books, newsletters, and journals, which is now called The Watchtower – Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. A man named Charles Taze Russell, took the lead in Bible education work and was the first editor of The Watchtower, yet he was not the founder. His goal was to promote the teachings of Jesus and to follow the practices of the first-century Christians. Since Jesus is the founder of Christianity, Jehovah Witnesses view Jesus as the founder of their religion as well.
c) Beliefs/Values: Jehovah Witnesses refer to their beliefs as the “the truth”.
Some of their beliefs include:
- The Bible “is without error or fault in all its teaching” - God inspired the Bible’s authors - The Virgin Birth - Jesus gave his life as a ransom for past and future humanity - Opposition to divorce - Opposition to homosexual behaviors, and pre-marital sex - Opposition to abortion - The large influence of Satan in the world - Genesis creation story and rejection of the theory of evolution
