My best friend, Alyssa, identifies as Greek Orthodox, so, over Spring Break, I attended a service with her. She belongs to Assumption Greek Orthodox church in Des Peres. Greek Orthodox is a denomination within Christianity. In the past, I have been to several Greek Festivals and large gatherings with her, so I was slightly familiar with the Greek atmosphere and culture. At the festivals there was a lot of Greek food, crafts, and dancing. The people are extremely proud of their Greek heritage and fully embrace it. Alyssa explained that these festivals are methods to raise money for the congregation.
The worship itself begins with the Lighting of the candles when one enters the church. Typically, members pay a dollar for a candle, as an offering, and

Lining the walls, ceiling, and front of the sanctuary were various art images of scenes from the Bible and Saints. Greeks typically venerate these icons by lighting a candle and kissing the icon’s head. In the front of the space is the holy sanctuary where only priests and altar boys may enter. The attire is formal as women wear modest dresses or skirts while men wear collared and buttoned shirts and dress pants. The church had begun to prepare for Easter, a celebration that Alyssa explained was larger than Christmas. The congregation observes Lent by refraining from eating meat and dairy products. On Holy Thursday Greeks dye eggs red to symbolize blood. On Good Friday, the process of Christ takes place, consisting of a symbolic coffin decorated with flowers that is taken outside the church through the parking lots and streets. Everyone respects the process by kissing the coffin as kissing is a cultural part of Greek culture. At midnight Sunday morning, there is a church service where the priest spreads fire through candles to the congregation. The phrases “Christos Anesti,” Christ is risen, and “Alithos Anesti,” he is risen indeed, are

This expedition seemed doomed because they started with three different strategies, and three different generals. The Athenians named three generals to lead the expedition. They named Alcibiades, Nicias and Lamchus as their leaders. Nicias, who had tried to convince the people of Attica not to go to Sicily, suggested that they sail towards Sicily and force a settlement between Segesta and Selinus; then after that return home. Lamachus, suggested that they could attack their real enemy, Syracuse as this would catch them off guard, and would encourage the rest of Sicily to be on the Athenian side.…

Although there are clear differences between the ideals of Catholic and Protestant faith, I believe that by the end of the reign of Elizabeth I, English Christianity was a fusion of old Catholic tradition still battling the ideas of Protestant reformation. I will demonstrate this in this essay by establishing catholic traditions, analysing what changes the protestants wished to make and finally evaluating their effect. There are three traditions that stand out within the practises of the Catholic Church, iconography, rituals and community life. We can explore these through 'Long Melford Church Before the Reformation ' in which Roger Martyn recounts his boyhood memories of the traditions of the Catholic Church. The use of images in the Catholic…

“The Great Commandment” On October 12, 2014, I attended the morning service at Beulah Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina. The service normally starts around 10:30 a.m. and ends a little after twelve o’clock. On that particular day, the service was divided into three parts: a baptism, the praise and worship service and finally the sermon. Dr. Coite Sherrill conducted the worship service and my pastor, Dr. Allen Roberts, delivered the sermon.…

Anglicanism is one of the many branches within Christianity that is tied together by similar beliefs, features of worship and church structure. Christianity is a religion which incorporates a range of denominations and faith groups, including Anglicanism; a tradition joined to Christianity consisting of ‘The Church of England’, which claims to be both reformed and Catholic following parallel beliefs to Christianity, which are evident throughout its worships and church services. The Church of England operates openly and independently around the world, however, with them all following and accepting the creed statement: ‘…a fellowship within One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of those duly constituted dioceses, provinces or regional Churches…

This book review is going to be looking the work of Catherine Bell in her book ‘Ritual Theory, Ritual Practice’. In this book, Bell looks at people’s curiosity with rituals and the pre-existing notions of rituals. Bell hashes out the argument on connections that make a discourse on ritual to compel cultural activity studies. Bell acknowledges that there hasn’t really been any analysis of the term ritual that has presented forward one definitive definition, that shows its role in the way people think around religion and culture. Bell across her book argues her thesis that ritual doesn’t control individuals or societies with no consensus.…

This Ritual Observation Project will be discussing my observations at Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. I went there on June seventh to gain insight first hand into the Catholic Church’s rituals and beliefs. I will begin by breaking down the entire mass that took place during my observation then I will compare and contrast Catholicism to Baptist Christianity (my religion). When I first entered the area where the mass was to be held at, I began to notice the exquisite detail and the Stations of the Cross, which shows Jesus’ crucifixion. The pictures that show the fourteen Stations of the Cross can be found in my Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church PowerPoint presentation.…
