After reading this Real World Self-Leadership Case I feel there is a few things that could have went differently. “During the evacuation, a collision between two of the aircraft caused an explosion and fire that claimed the lives of eight U.S. servicemen” (Neck, Manz, & Houghton, 2017). Even though a tragic accident happened “in my personal opinion” does not have anything to do with the plan of the mission. When they had planned out this mission they did not plan that there may be storms. The issue came up when the servicemen decided to abort the mission so quickly. I feel that if the servicemen did not try to leave so abruptly then maybe the incident would not have happened at all. This is the part where the …show more content…
I believe one reason they had such wonderful team strategies is because it was such a desperate situation to get as many people to safety as they possibly could. “Michael Day of the U.S. coast guard sent out a call to all of the boats in Manhattan to come and assets the coast guard to evacuating all of the survivors that was waiting at the water edge of Manhattan” (RoadtoResilience, 2011). There were thousands of tugboats that showed up to provide a helping hand in this critical situation. Those rescuers had only one thing on their minds and that was to rescue every single person from the horrific event that was happing just right in front of them. “Motivation generates the mental effort that drives us to apply our knowledge and skills” (Clark, 2003). Those men and women who volunteered their time and their lives to save the ones who survived most defiantly had motivation running through them. “Individuals on a team can have personal goals that are coordinated with and necessary for achieving the team’s goals, but the focus for the team is to achieve the shared goals of the team as a whole” (Neck, Manz, & Houghton, 2017). All of the rescuers in 9/11 had a specific team goal and that was to make sure all the people who survived made it off Manhattan island alive. They put their lives on the line to help other they probably did not even know. But, the Boatlift is a …show more content…
Sometimes preschool are afraid of making their own discussion when it comes to certain events. “Self- censorship of concerns and Collective efforts to rationalize” (Neck, Manz, & Houghton, 2017). These are two Groupthink issues that I personally see on a daily basis at my work. One of the strategies I would use is “Specific behavioral team self-leadership practices include team self-observation, team self-goal-setting, team cue modification, team self-reward/self-punishment, and team rehearsal (practice)” (Neck, Manz, & Houghton, 2017). From the article that was provided the article provides an example to putting the strategies into place. “This approach requires (1) defining the problem; (2) analyzing its nature and the suspected causes; (3) identifying and ranking criteria for solutions; and ultimately (4) evaluating and selecting a solution” (Riordan & Riordan). This four step approach should be helpfully with the situations I face personally at work. Now it is time to discuss about optimistic and self-leadership people in a group. I feel that optimistic people and self-leadership people are similar when it comes to doing work in a workplace. “Optimistic leaders are more likely to see problems as challenges, exert greater effort for longer periods to reach their goals, and seek out and appreciate the positive aspects of difficult situations” (Tombaugh, 2005). I believe having an optimistic manager
