One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Log 1 1/15/17 Preface, Page 1
“One flew east, one flew west, one flew over the cuckoo’s nest” This is the opening statement of the book. It is also a classic children’s nursery rhyme, which intrigued me and is an allusion to the child-like state that the mental patients are in. As I kept reading, this quote made more sense. This quote is an example of foreshadowing as it gives information about the asylum even before the story starts. In the story there are two clear groups, those who fly east and those who fly west. Nurse Ratchet and her workers opposed to the patients are the two clear groups; however, that still leaves the one that flew over. Though I haven’t finished the book, Chief Brodem is this person. He is locked up in this asylum for reasons we don’t know, and he could be the one to spread his wings and fly above it all. Eventually he may even be let out of the asylum.

This quote ends the first ‘chapter”, and I feel sets the tone for a majority of the book. Many of these patients are confused and it’s hard for them to think straight. The reader is confused on what is the truth. I constantly wonder if the mental patients are even crazy. Chief says that it’s the truth even if it didn’t happen; he is referring to different treatments in this facility. It may seem straight forward, but this quote has a second meaning. In life, we have things, like faith, that we assume to be the truth though we do not know if it happened. This statement shows a higher thinking of Chief. I wonder if he has this higher thinking, is he actually insane? I cannot be sure now since it is so soon in the book, but a possible theme is the struggle between sanity and insane
