The challenges that the people are facing are struggling to fit in with their language,losing trust in your home, and eat disgusting food. This quote shows that Mother is struggling with English because she cannot talk to the butcher correctly, “Mother wrinkles her brows, thinking, pausing, then rings the buzzer again.”(Lai 217) Like it mentioned Ha’s mom is trying to get the butcher to grind the meat but the butcher doesn't understand. In this next Quote a person named Emir has to lose the trust of his home because of the attackers, “I had to crawl through my apartment on my hands and knees to avoid being shot at.”(Emir) Emir had to crawl through his apartment, (His safe place), to stay alive. The final quote show’s Ha eating disgusting food she’s not used to,“Brother Vu sautes the beef-and-potato goo…”(Lai 100) Ha is calling her food something disgusting like Goo. Ha and other refugees are struggling to talk and speak English, Lose personal items, and eating not so delightful food. …show more content…
The quote that I found has a strong connection to going back again, “Nothing like the floral wafts that once calmed me.”(Lai 174) Ha smells the incense that calms her, meaning she overcomes fear.The second quote shows refugees thinking about the future,“That’s a fact. All you know about the U.S is from the Movies.”(Amela) Immigrants think about what their lives are gonna be in the U.S weather it's a good job, or a good house. The final quote shows how Ha has to compromise and overcome food, “Strips of papaya...Plump moist chewy bites...Not the same, but not bad at all.” Ha overcomes by remembering the papaya from her bad papaya memory. Ha throughout the book has many remembrances of her old times of hunger fear and bad food, these quotes show how she overcomes
