After OJ was asked to surrender to the L.A police for his connection with the murder of his ex-wife and her friend, he led L.A police on a low speed chase. Before this, OJ refused to surrender at 11AM on June 17th and the authorities had to announce OJ as a fugitive. During the chase, Orenthal was demanding his friend, Al Cowlings, to continue driving, despite authorities following them on the Santa Anna freeway in Orange County. OJ was shown on TV “goin’ down the highway and he had four or five police cruisers behind him, blocking the highway, and they just followed him, basically”, as James Beachler recalls. OJ had a gun to his own head and threatened to shoot himself if Cowlings pulled over and surrendered him to the police.
