Odysseus Leadership In Homer's Odyssey

In the Odyssey, Odysseus shows good leadership throughout his twenty year journey back to Ithaca. There is evidence and details to support why Odysseus shows good leadership in the Odyssey. To prove that Odysseus is a good leader, he shows intelligence which is part of what the Greeks valued. Odysseus is strong willed and he puts his life at risk when trying to save his men from all the dangers throughout the journey. Odysseus uses the Trojan Horse Trick to win the Trojan War and he tricks Polyphemus into thinking that his name was “nohbdy” which is evidence from the Odyssey that shows that Odysseus is intelligent. Also, he takes Circe’s advice on how to avoid the Sirens which makes him strong willed because Circe tells him to order his men to tie him down and Odysseus is willing to go through that torture. This is why Odysseus is risking his life for his men because if Odysseus was not tied down he would have ended up killing the whole crew by the sounds of the Sirens so he’s taking the risk of being tied.

“What a thing was this, too, which that mighty man wrought and endured in the carven horse, wherein all we chiefs of the Argives were sitting, bearing to the Trojans death and fate!” Odysseus uses a trick called “The Trojan Horse Trick” where the Trojans are gifted with a wooden horse not knowing that Odysseus and his men hid inside of it. The Trojans brought the wooden horse into the city and celebrated their “victory” until they fell into their slumber. Once the city was asleep, Odysseus and his men crawled out from the wooden horse and began to attack leading to the real victory over the war. This is also why Odysseus is a good leader.
