“Odysseus’ Journey”
The epic poem we all know shows much detail of struggles that is being thrown at the ‘Teller of Tales’ Odysseus. “The Odyssey” by Homer shows that Odysseus goes through so many things to get back home to his wife Penelope on the land of Ithaca, but which part is most importantly impacted on the hero? A hero’s qualities are most defined by his journey and adventure, not the end of it. Through the book, beginning to end Odysseus mostly shows Loyalty, Intelligence and Leadership.
First off, Odysseus shows Loyalty to his crew even when he received disloyalty in return. In book 10 when they came across the island of Aeaea and Circe, Elpenor alerts the leader that his colleagues were transformed into swine. Odysseus went on to go save them instead of leaving them behind on the island. Once he met with Circe, it wouldn't work if he just asked her to let them go. Instead he respectfully trusts Hermes and does as he is told to not to refuse the Nymph with the lovely braids. “I will not enter your bed unless you can bring yourself to swear a solemn oath that you will never attempt any evil thing against me” [-Pg.119.10] The plan succeeding he soon gets his comrades back into themselves once more before sailing off to continue their adventure. On the island of the lotus eaters, the men refused to leave and wanted to stay on the island. “I brought them back to the ships by main force, grumbling and complaining, and when i had them there, tied them up and stowed them under the benches” [Pg 102.9] Odysseus didn't give up and leave his mates on the island, he didn't take their orders to stay. He took charge, he didn't listen he took them and tied them under the ship as everyone else got on board. He wants to keep his crew on track on the venture home not laze around. That is how true leadership
