From my experience, children are capable of learning advanced concepts at an early age and although it is vital to select content that matches the cognitive capacities of students, undoubtedly students can benefit from more in depth material. My sons were taking high school classes starting in 6th grade. By the time my son went to high school, he had 6 high school honors classes. Algebra I, Algebra II, World History, Physical Science, Geometry, and American History. We obtained special permission from for one of my sons to sign up for an 11th grade American History Honors class, since he was still in 7th grade. Both of my sons earned an A in every upper level class they took. Although programs in the public and private schools allow students to sign up for upper level classes while in middle school, there are a number of classes that they not are allowed to attend. Since my children were home schooled, I made sure that they were exactly at the level that they were capable of. My sons learned science and math through active involvement with the environment and through correlation with the real world. We spent every summer in North Carolina and my sons' favorite activities was to explore the creek and the woods, observing the frogs, snakes, birds, turtles, and any all the bugs that crossed their path. They would catch the frogs, keep them long enough to research and analyze them, and then release them. That’s right, we did not have internet or cable at our cabin allowing them to spent time outdoors to entertain themselves. They caught a humming bird, several frogs, a bat, and turtles. We should offer our children context that is developmentally appropriate and sequentially increases in depth as children advance through school. Have discussion with children on social and cultural issues, ensuring that the context is meaningful and also relevant to the child. …show more content…
We used to watch the world news after recording it. I would select the topics relevant to the issues I felt the necessity to discuss with my children allowing us to censor those topics that were too weighty. We would have discussions on issues related to our state, the nation, and the world. We had discussion on diverse point of views by recording news from different networks. By the time they were 12 years old, they were able to follow every political or social issue. This is history in the making and I felt that my children should be able to understand and have their own opinion. They were able to discern what political party the person reporting the news belonged to, just by listening to them. Have dialogs explaining how the news can be distorted, depending on what station is reporting it and that newspaper and magazines from different countries will offer a different point of view. It became a game to listen to the news and figure out whether the station sided with the democrats or republicans. Listening to one source of news can be deceptive, consequently the only way to
