Analysis Of Early Childhood Observation

On September 16th, 2015 I went to Chippewa Elementary School in Holtsville, New York. I made an observation at the beginning of the day in Mrs. Carey’s Kindergarten class. The purpose of this observation is to observe and evaluate the human matters of sentiments, behaviors, standards and relationships between teachers and students within the classroom. When I first walk into the classroom it felt dreary due to the whole classroom having dark stained wood paneling on all walls, dark wooden tables and desks. The teacher tried to brighten up with classroom by displaying photos of the children’s family members, birthday calendar displaying all the children’s upcoming birthdays, word wall, student’s names, along with educational posters and art …show more content…
Mrs. Carey provided detailed instructions on how to do the class work. The educator had the kids draw a picture of what they did over the weekend (this was an every Monday routine). Now, while this was taking place one student’s was busy removing his shoe laces completely out of his shoes. Mrs. Carey had to ask the teacher’s assistant to help with re-lacing his shoes. During conducting their school work Mrs. Carey also had a saying that she would say to the children to get their attention “eyes on me 1, 2, 3” then the children would say back to her “eyes on you 1, 2, …show more content…
Carey’s class, the environment made me feel comfortable and welcome. All adults were respectful to each other including to the students and the children were respectful back to the adults. There was no signs of favoritism, carelessness or prejudice. Everyone seemed caring and excited to be in the classroom. I do believe the class staff could have worked better together, the student teacher and assistant teacher need to be more aware of what is taking place within the classroom and help out Mrs. Carey more than they do. It has only been two weeks since school started, so maybe that is playing a role. It still has that community feeling in the classroom at this moment. I am assuming as the school year plays out everyone will warm up more to each other to give it more of a family feeling. The only downfall I have seen was that the children didn’t have too much freedom or choices. For the 3 ½ hours I was there the students were on a very strict structured schedule which you could see it puts stress on the teacher and students. The children had to be continually told to their classwork and once they completed their work, Mrs. Carey kept them busy with

The atmosphere was very welcoming, it seemed more like a casual get together rather than a meeting. The flow was very well organized and the format was well put together, similar to a lesson plan. There were hardly any pauses, it was just a continuous conversation. No one over talked anyone, every individual was being heard. The members were very supportive and attentive to each other.…

Most of the classes are what you would expect them to be except for the early childhood education class. In this class, the high school students act as the teachers to the preschoolers. I love the high school as a whole, but I did not like the setup of the particular classroom I was in. This class has caused me to think about what it really means to be an educator and what I want to achieve as one. I have gained ideas on not just the physical atmosphere of my future classroom, but on the educational atmosphere as well. I can attribute these ideas to the observations and to the readings I conducted for this class. The teachers I observed were helpful and were happy to answer any questions I had. The readings about the Universal Constructs and the Characteristics of Effective Instruction will help me to develop an effective teaching style.…

Introduction My two weeks of practicum experience were, frankly, not what I anticipated, and what I would even describe as a culture shock. However, my participation was overwhelmingly positive. For, I had many presumptions about what teaching looked like pragmatically in the classroom, but I was blown away by the many facets that I have learned about during my first stint as a student teacher. There are two overarching themes that were prominent during my practicum observations: diversity and inclusion and school culture. I will be referring to my placements as School A, an elementary school, and School B, a junior high, throughout my paper.…
