Understanding Obesity In America It is estimated around 78 million Americans are either overweight or obese. This is around 70 percent of the adult population in America. This major Public Health issue in America should be the forefront of the task list. A study was done on the impact of obesity and its co-morbidities on American Years Life Lost4. Compared to the other world powers, the effect is staggering. After a very detailed study they estimated the fall is anywhere from a fifth to a third responsible solely for YLLs. The co-morbidities of obesity include cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and even psychosocial issues like depression and low self-esteem5.
