Everyone knows the game of basketball by now, but not many people know how it got started. Basketball was first discovered in Springfield, Massachusetts by a guy named Dr. James Naismith in 1891. Dr. Naismith was told by Dr. Luther Gulick, who was in charge of the Physical Education at the School of Christian Workers, to think of a new game. Dr. Naismith struggled to come up with something. His first idea was to bring soccer and lacrosse inside, but that was too physical. He finally thought of an old childhood game he used to play called duck-on-the-rock. This game gave him the idea of a new game called basket ball. It wasn’t the exact game he played, but the method was similar. The game required a soccer ball, two peach baskets at the top of a ten foot pole, and a field half of the size of a court today. The goal of the game was to get the ball into the peach baskets by following the thirteen rules.
The rules Dr. Naismith invented were the ball can be throw and batted in any direction. The player is not allowed to run with the ball, they must throw it from the spot they caught it in. The ball must be held with the hands, not with the arms or against the body. The player must play fair, which means no holding, pushing, striking, shouldering, or tripping an opponent. A foul on a player is striking the ball with a fist. A goal will be given to the opponents if the team has three fouls in a row. A goal is made when the ball goes into the basket and stays in.
