Women wasn’t even allowed to participate in physical activity in the 1870’s. They were limited until title 9 became a law. Before title 9, women could only play recreational sports with dresses and skirts on. Women sport were non-competitive, rule-less and informal. Women were being criticized and talked down upon back in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. People didn’t think that women were tough enough or physically capable to play the physical sports.
Women did not receive the same opportunities as the men did because of the criticism they received. The first sport that were active in intercollegiate sport was basketball which was introduced at Smith College in 1892. Then basketball quickly spread to other colleges. Women first intercollegiate competition was a tennis match, it was canceled because Vassar didn’t allow their women athletes to participate in competition between colleges. Women sports and intercollegiate competition gained. That’s just a little history of women sport, I can go on and write forever about it because they have overcame so much adversity and criticism that happened back in the day. When you read and learn
