Peach Baskets

When basketball first started, the use of peach baskets would cause a stoppage of the game every time someone scored because the ball would be stuck in the basket (Kloppenburg, et al. 2013). This slowed down the pace of the game. At first, someone with a ladder had to fetch the ball from the basket until eventually the bottoms were removed from the baskets. In 1893, after several attempts to alter or replace the basket, cast iron rims replaced these baskets (Kloppenburg, et al. 2013). This was a major milestone for basketball since the free falling ball after a made basket dramatically increased tempo and scoring of the game.
