You Should Like the Kansas Jayhawks for Basketball Lawrence, Kansas. “Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU.” This is the chant that the Jayhawk faithful chants at every home game. Teddy Roosevelt pronounced it the greatest college chant he’s ever heard. It is deafening. One reason you should like the Kansas Jayhawks basketball team is because Dr. James Naismith was the inventor of basketball. He joined the Kansas staff in 1898 and was the first coach of the Kansas Jayhawks. The basketball Hall of Fame is also named after James Naismith. Before Naismith introduced it to boys, it was known as a girl sport. On February 4, 1899, Kansas played its first varsity game at an ice skate rink. 150 people attended the game, now they have 16,300 people at every game. The final score was 16-5. KU ties a record for most regular season conference titles. Kansas has 13 straight. UCLA also had a streak of 13 straight but it was achieved by 3 different coaches, Kansas was achieved by one coach, Bill Self. John Wooden, arguably the greatest winner in sports history, never won more than 9 in a row. Mike Krzyzewski, also known as Coach K, who some say is the greatest coach in any sport ever, has never won more than 5 straight. KU has 3 national titles, 2 helm championships, and 14 final four appearances. They have also been to 46 NCAA tournaments. Kansas ranks number 1 in winnings seasons, number of consensus first team all-Americans, consecutive 30 win seasons, and regular season conference
