Syracuse, New York has seen a 700% increase in heroin addiction from 2000 until 2010. Among the men and women addicted are innocent babies being born with an addiction, and undergo the agony of withdrawals. Every few days, a baby is born addicted to heroin or other opiate drugs in Onondaga County, which has the second highest rate for babies born addicted. In 2015, 70 babies were admitted to Crouse Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is an increase from 33 babies born addicted in 2012 (Mulder, Feb 2016). On March 18th, 2016, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer requested that a forum be held at Crouse Hospital speaking fighting the heroin epidemic in Syracuse. He stated that Central New York is the largest opioid epidemic in New York State and the entire country. Onondaga County is reporting 15 overdose deaths per 100,000 people (Weiner, 2016). The number of people dying from overdose will continue to increase. Syracuse is being consumed by heroin and there are programs to help addicts fight back but there are just not enough beds in inpatient rehabs and lengthy waiting time for outpatient treatment. Pregnant females experience a much shorter waiting time to get treatment. January 20th, 2016 Dr. Ross Sullivan spoke at the Civic Center Carrier Theater in downtown Syracuse on the Prevention of Addiction and the Role of Physicians and Community. This forum targeted the epidemic of heroin and other opiates that are steady increasing at a fast rate throughout Onondaga County.…
