During this period of time, the U.S. caused lots of troubles for the better of the country. Most Americans gradually suggested to the idea of expansion overseas, such as, the Hawaiian Island. There were factors that fueled the new American Imperialism. There were political, military, and economic competition among other industrial nations. Another factor was that there was a belief in the racial and cultural superiority of people of English descent. At this time, the United States got involved in a war with Spain. With this, United States became more involved with other territories like the Philippines, Cuba, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. had many negative effects on other territories, they managed to have some positive effects as well. Puerto Rico became under the control of the U.S. after Luis Rivera, negotiated Puerto Rico’ independence from Spain. With that Puerto Rico earned rights like being able to elect their own governor. ("Luis Muñoz Marín." P.1). This shows a positive effect on Puerto Rico because after becoming a U.S. territory, they earned a right to elect their own governor. King David Kalakaua was influenced and signed a treaty with the U.S. so Hawaiian sugar could be sold in the U.S. tax-free. This made Hawaiian sugar cheaper in the U.S. than it had been before, so people in America started buying it more and more and the sugar industry in Hawaii boomed.(Danzer, 25). This shows a positive effect on the Hawaiians because King David Kalakaua and the United states signed a treaty to where Hawaiian sugar could be sold in the U.S., which made it cheaper in the U.S. than it had before, so people in America started buying more of it and Hawaii’s sugar industry boomed. The U.S. decided to help Panama get their independence from Columbia. In return, the Panamanian government gave the U.S. the land to build a canal. After it was built, the canal made it easier for international movement of people and trade goods (“Panama Canal.” P.1). This shows a positive effect for the Panamanians because the U.S. helped Panama get their independence and by building the canal it helped other …show more content…
tried to take over Hawaii, Americans had some major effects on the Hawaiians. Hawaii became a U.S territory because of Congress, though no Hawaiians had ever voted on this (Danzer, 31). This shows a negative effect on Hawaiians because the U.S. declared Hawaii as a state without the people of Hawaii approve it. Also, King David Kalakaua was forced to sign the Bayonet Constitution, which stripped him of many of his powers as a king. Because of the Bayonet Constitution, it made it easier to pressure the king to allowing the U.S. to build naval bases at Pearl Harbor (Danzer, 26). This shows a negative effect on Hawaiians because a militia of American sugar planters forced King David Kalakaua to sign the Bayonet Constitution and pressured the King to allow them to build naval bases. When U.S. arrived in Hawaii they had no real excuses to overthrow the Queen (Blount, P.1). This also shows a negative effect on Hawaiians because the U.S overthrew their Queen when they arrived, noticing how bad their government
