“I have observed this in my experience of slavery, – that whenever my condition was improved, instead of its increasing my contentment, it only increased my desire to be free, and set me to thinking of plans to gain my freedom.” Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave, this autobiography was published in 1845. Frederick a prominent abolitionist figure was the first black “public intellectual.” At a time where many slaves were illiterate and prohibited to learn how to read and write, Douglass, despite being forbidden to do so by his master (Hugh Auld), managed to learn to read and write. His narrative has very astounding vocabulary which impressed many people. To Douglass, literacy was “a most perplexing difficulty – to wit, the white man’s power to enslave the black man. It was a grand achievement, and I prized it very highly. From the moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom.” I believe that Douglas wrote his autobiography to not only convey his life experience as a slave, but he wrote it so that other people can read it and realize how brutal the life of a slave was at the time.
Frederick Douglass was born in Tuckahoe, in Talbot County, Maryland. He had no knowledge of his age during his childhood. The white children knew their age, and he longed to know his, the unknowing of his age made him unhappy, he didn’t understand why he was being deprived of the same privilege as that of a white child.
