“You’re my new grandma,” uttered by an innocent five year old child to her already smiling grandmother. At a very young age, my grandmother and I had a bond. Not exactly the type of connection that a child has with their own grandmother or grandfather, but I had a very special type of bond with my own grandmother. She is a very sweet lady who takes in her children and grandchildren whenever they needed something or someone. My grandmother is my calming ocean and vice versa. My grandmother was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, on a placid little farm. She grew up in a brick house with five or seven other siblings. It was a very crowded house. As she matured, my grandmother started becoming this woman who one could go to in a time of need. When she grew to an adult, she married a man who would later divorce her and leave her with a child to take care of. She wasn’t able to take care of him by herself so she enlisted the help of my great grandmother, Susie. While my grandmother was out trying to provide for her son, Susie took care of him while she was not there. Years later, she met another man who would later become my step - grandfather and the father to my aunt. My grandmother’s never had an easy life, but she’s tougher than she looks. She is very optimistic about life and how everything will get better if you stick it through. Since I don’t live with her anymore, going to visit her is a real treat because her face just lights up when she sees me.…
