In the short story “ A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor the grandma isn’t just a regular sweet old lady. Through out the story she proves herself to be a lousy and conniving mother and grandmother. Not only does she deceive her family, but also herself. A close look at her words and actions show the grandmother to be manipulative, over critical, and over compensating in her own judgments of herself.
The very first characteristic of the grandmother shown is how manipulative she is. In the beginning of the story the readers find out that the family is taking a trip to Florida and that the grandmother doesn’t wish to go there. So with out delay the grandmother goes to work trying to change Bailey, her son’s, mind. The grandma isn’t confrontational she is more subtle. She never comes right out and says, “I don’t want to go to Florida!” Instead she makes little indirect comments to Bailey to hopefully change his mind.“…The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here that it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn’t

If she had, she would realize she is far from perfect, just like everyone else. Being a “good person” to the grandmother depends on the family and social class a person comes from. Her true colors are revealed when the Misfit shows up. If the grandmother was a good Christian woman she would have begged the Misfit to spare the lives of her family, not once did she ask this of him. The grandmother was to busy begging for her own life. “I know you wouldn’t shoot a lady! I know you come from nice people! Pray! Jesus, you ought not to shoot a lady.”(934) This one act shows what kind of character she really has. She isn’t worried about the rest of her family, just her own selfish

In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, both the Grandmother and The Misfit fulfill this role. The grandmother is an unlikely character to receive this grace. Some of the actions she takes through out the story is to tell lies to her grandchildren, attempt to undermine and manipulate her son, as well as continually comparing the inadequacies of the present to the sufficiencies of the past. The Grandmother tries to manipulate her son, Bailey from the very beginning of the story. While trying to convince him to go to Tennessee instead of Florida, she attempts to change his mind using the newspaper article about the threat The Misfit poses to his children, saying “I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that in it.…

The grandmother proves that she is racist and looks down on the black race and every race she feels is a minority to her. For example, when she is telling a story to June Star she says, “Mr. Teagarden brought the watermelon and there was no one at home and he left it on the front porch and returned in his buggy to Jasper, but she never got the watermelon, she said, because a nigger boy ate it when he saw the initials, E.A.T! (429).” First of all she is referring towards the black race wrong and expresses herself as if the black race does not mean anything. Another way you can prove she looks down on a minority group is when she states she would not marry a man who only brings her watermelon. An example would be “She said she wouldn’t marry a man that just brought her a watermelon on Saturday.”…

This adds to the irony of the story because the grandmother was supposed to symbolize “good” people in society. Yet it took a gun being held to her head, and her entire family being killed for her to finally realize that even she was flawed. Meaning she is no better or worse than anyone else. O’Connor then goes on to depict the grandmother as a “good” person though her actions. The grandmother acts like a “good” person on the road by “...would not let the children throw the box and the peanut butter napkins out the window” (O’Connor 140).…

The article even points out that she was like this from the beginning when she wanted to go to Tennessee and tried to convince Bailey to go.
