Being told I could be whatever I wanted to be when I grow up was a frequent conversation between my parents and I when I was a child. When asked what I wanted to be, I would reply I want to be a pop star, an actress or the president of the United States of course. As I progressively got older, the conversation shifted to possible majors and where I would pursue that degree at. Graduation day came and all I knew is that I wanted to study at Michigan State University as an Undeclared student. Coming into the semester, my advisor and I laid out classes that hopefully would lead me in a direction that would clearly help me figure out what I want to study. The class I least thought I would enjoy ended up being the one that I declared a major within. Who knew that Allison Singh would want to be an elementary teacher. One day I was just sitting there in class and everything just clicked into place. I was excited thinking about my future and all of the students I would help over the years. I just knew this is what I wanted to do. They say that if you do something you love, you don’t work a day in your life. And for me, this is what fit that. Despite the low pay and maybe being disliked by some kids, the benefits outweighed the bad in my book and that’s all that matters to me. To understand the concept of teaching on a more personal level, I contacted a middle math teacher I had for an interview. Mrs. Kruizenga had gotten a master’s degree in mathematics and in English.
