My closet is my museum; my history. Artifacts from each era lay there, undisturbed, concealed by dust. On the top shelve, a box of tipis evokes one of my favorite and passionate eras: my 3rd grade obsession over Native Americans. After learning about the atrocities committed by European colonists to the natives, my family and I took a trip to a colonial museum. There, people were emulating various Native Americans and colonists. When I saw one of the “colonists”, the memories from the slaughter and killing came to mind. Furiously, I stormed towards the “colonist”, and screamed “WHY DID YOU AND THE OTHER COLONISTS KILL THE NATIVE AMERICANS! THEY WERE INNOCENT WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU!?” while clutching my Native American toy set. At the time, I was too young and oblivious to realize that she was merely an actor, but the event epitomizes my passion at the time. The other relics include: a no longer functional telescope to mark my astronomy phase, a slightly deflated Velociraptor from my dinosaur obsession, various Lego pieces, streaks of red and blue paint on the walls and carpet that bring back memories of my father rebuking me for “not being careful while painting,” and my old Ravenclaw Hogwarts cloak to symbolize the book series that transformed me from a narrow-mined, book hating child into a curious bibliophile. My current passion, which I want to practice for my entire life, lies in the social sciences and education reform, as evidenced by my assortment of books. I want to continue to learn the social sciences for the sake of understanding and I want to be a teacher and use my classroom as a laboratory for innovation. Naturally, the ideal trajectory is a PhD followed by academia. Reed is well-known for its high percentage of students going on to get PhDs, and the rigorous courses offered at Reed promote discussion and searching for connections between ideas rather than bland memorization. This is the perfect first step toward my goal. Furthermore, the required senior thesis would allow me to gain a deeper understanding of my field by contributing something new to society and making new connections. It will also prepare me for the doctoral dissertation. Throughout my life, I’ve always heard others stress the importance of class size.
