Personal Narrative: My Closet

Improved Essays
If I were to describe my life using one phrase, it’d probably end up being an oxymoron like “organized chaos” or “random order.” To the casual observer, my life appears to entail sporadic, eclectic passions that start out strong then fade away, replaced by a new hobby. However, behind this chaotic hodgepodge of obsessions lies a unifying theme: collecting information and expanding my mind. My constant thirst for learning has taken various forms throughout my life. The physical embodiment of this abstract trait is my closet.

My closet is my museum; my history. Artifacts from each era lay there, undisturbed, concealed by dust. On the top shelve, a box of tipis evokes one of my favorite and passionate eras: my 3rd grade obsession over Native Americans. After learning about the atrocities committed by European colonists to the natives, my family and I took a trip to a colonial museum. There, people were emulating various Native Americans and colonists. When I saw one of the “colonists”, the memories from the slaughter and killing came to mind. Furiously, I stormed towards the “colonist”, and screamed “WHY DID YOU AND THE OTHER COLONISTS KILL THE NATIVE AMERICANS! THEY WERE INNOCENT WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU!?” while clutching my Native American toy set. At the time, I was too young and oblivious to realize that she was merely an actor, but the event epitomizes my passion at the time. I’m still interested in Native American history, except I don’t yell at “pretend colonists” anymore, to the relief of my parents.

The other relics include: a no longer functional telescope to mark my astronomy phase, a slightly deflated Velociraptor from my dinosaur obsession, various Lego pieces, streaks of red and blue paint on the walls and carpet that bring back memories of my father rebuking me for “not being careful while painting,” and my old Ravenclaw Hogwarts cloak to symbolize the book series that transformed me from a narrow-mined, book hating child into a curious bibliophile. After reading a plethora of reviews and blogs written by Reedies, I’ve learned that the student body is diverse and unique, but they’re all united by their passion for learning, like my obsessive phases. …show more content…
My current passion, which I want to practice for my entire life, lies in the social sciences and education reform, as evidenced by my assortment of books. I want to continue to learn the social sciences for the sake of understanding and I want to be a teacher and use my classroom as a laboratory for innovation. Naturally, the ideal trajectory is a PhD followed by academia. Reed is well-known for its high percentage of students going on to get PhDs, and the rigorous courses offered at Reed promote discussion and searching for connections between ideas rather than bland memorization. This is the perfect first step toward my goal. Furthermore, the required senior thesis would allow me to gain a deeper understanding of my field by contributing something new to society and making new connections. It will also prepare me for the doctoral dissertation. Throughout my life, I’ve always heard others stress the importance of class size. Coming from a large high school, I never fully grasped the benefits of small classes until I took Human Geography in 11th grade. It was a 9 person class, and at the end of the semester, by desire for a college with small sizes was cemented. We

There is a common saying that states, “Which weighs more; 200 pounds of bricks or 200 pounds of feathers?” One might say that they both weigh the same; however, the answer is the feathers because you also have to carry the weight of the great injustice done to those poor birds. When I was asked to list all the things I carry, I started listing the physical items, but after a while, I realized that there emotional items that I carry as well. I carry memories and feelings that either haunt or delight me. And while the physical things I carry are largely based on necessity, the emotional things I carry will be with me forever.…
