Through his nine stages of development Erik Erikson points out several milestones that a person must complete before they can successfully move on to the next stages of life. These stages are required and if not met, often present stagnation which can lead to social, and emotional growth impairments. During the third stage of development Erikson research suggest that in early childhood must learn to understand initiative vs. guilt. As this stages teaches children about self-control and the consequences they may experience if the behavior continues to occur. Erikson believed that during this stage children must determine their own tasks and actions. In Kathleen’s experience with this stage of development she was able to complete daily actives in her early childhood with the directions of rules and consequences by her parents. During her middle childhood yeas Kathleen, struggled with shyness in school which affected her learning abilities. Her parents raised her believing that children should be seen and not heard which could have played an impact in her early education. Erikson stage of industry vs. inferiority states that children must be proficient at gaining cognitive and social skills. Being able to master these skills helps sets children up for success as they learn to use these skills sets to progress into the next stage. But some children can get stuck in this stage of development. “Sometimes children have difficulty at this stage because they have not successfully resolved the conflicts at earlier stages” (Crane, 2000). In Kathleen’s case her shyness resulted in being held back in first grade and early problems with learning. However, in order to help deal with the shyness, Kathleen was able to make friends and that helped move her along into the next stage of development. During her adolescent years, Kathleen was able enjoy friendships and school. While she still struggled with her shyness. She was able to progress from middle childhood into adolescence years with support from her family and friends. According to Erickson during these years “a sense of identity through accomplishments is created. The ability to stand up, walk, run, play ball, draw, and read all contribute to a sense of ego identity”.(Crane, 2000). It was during this stage of development that Kathleen was able to create a sense of identity through social skills and activities. It is during this stage that young people begin to love and care for others. Erikson stage of development intimacy vs. isolation suggest that young adults develop the capacity to commit to others. This can be seen as spouses, children, or close friends. During this stage of development Kathleen married her husband Daniel and had two children. While there was serval transitions from living environments to additions of family members and jobs that both Kathleen and Daniel experienced during this time period.
