Throughout the narrative Mr. Covey whips Frederick for no good reason. One of the times that he whips him is because he messed up the cart of wood because he had never driven a cart with oxen. Another time was when Frederick stopped working because he had a heat stroke. Mr. Covey comes up and kicks Frederick in the ribs. When Frederick does not get up, Mr. Covey proceeds to hit him in the head with a hickory slab. To resolve this conflict, Frederick gets up and makes a trip to ask Master Thomas for protection.
