The invention that I believe that has had the most negative impact on our world is Monsanto’s Roundup herbicides and their Roundup Ready genetically modified crops. Ever since it’s introduction, it has been slowly killing our planet and economy in more ways than one. These crops have proven so deadly that they have been heavily restricted and even banned in the European Union and many other countries. One would think that if this way of producing a large part of the world’s food supply has been proven over and over again to be detrimental to human health and the environment, that the corporation making it would go out of business, but Monsanto has evaded this by claiming a monopoly over the seed and food industry and paying off courts. Monsanto was formed in 1901 by John Francis Queeny and one of their first products was an artificial sweetener called saccharin used in soft drinks like Coca-Cola. This chemical was known even then to be dangerous but efforts to stop its manufacture were interrupted in court, marking the beginning of Monsanto 's corrupt ways. Their first hybrid corn seed was produced in the 1930’s, but other interest slowed its expansion. In 1970 a young chemist named John Franz, led by Dr. Phil Hamm, was investigating compounds used as water softeners. He found a chemical that could be used as a herbicide called glyphosate. This was patented in 1976 as Roundup herbicide and the cash cow was commercialized in the U.S.. Glyphosate kills every other type of…
