In the past, when pirates “posed a serious threat to commerce in the Caribbean and Atlantic oceans”, Britain just sent out their Royal Navy to hang them all. Nowadays, there are still dozens of warships from countries all over the world, including Italy, Greece, France, Russia, the United States, and many others. After they catch some pirates, there is still not any specified way to punish them or get rid of them. They cannot send them for a trial in Somalia, since the central government there has not been functioning for several decades. Hanging the pirates is also not a widely accepted punishment anymore, so it is also no longer an option. In fact, pirates that are captured are sometimes sent back to the Somali coast where they came from, and thus basically undoing everything you just did. Other times, when the pirates are caught, they are imprisoned. It is still unclear how exactly we should stop these pirates, but efforts are still being made
