Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism is a general term for a group of complex disorders of brain development. (1st website) The disorders are characterized in many degrees, such as difficulty in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repeat behaviors. Those with ASD, have exceptional abilities in visual skills, music and academic skills, and other cannot live independently. Autism spectrum disorder, is considered a “spectrum disorder.” Meaning that ASD affects people in different ways, from a range that can vary from mild to severe. (2nd website) Those with ASD share common symptoms, however there are differences when they symptoms start and become noticeable, how severe they are, and the exact nature of the symptoms.

The second category is the idea that an individual requires “substantial support.” In this category, social impairments will still occur even with support present, and they have a hard time coping with changes. The third category is individuals that, “require very substantial support.” An individual in this category has very little interest in having social interaction, their communication skills cause severe impairments in social interaction, and someone in this category has a very hard time in coping with any type of change that may occur.
