Racial discourse includes various expressions such as “...beliefs and verbal outbursts(epithets, slurs, etc.), acts and their consequences , and the principles upon which racialized institutions are based” (Goldberg 41). This specific expression of racist discourse refers to way the dominant group verbally interacts with the dominated group such as people of color, immigrants, and etc. Microaggression is one of the many examples that we can help understand what the meaning of racist discourse is. For example, some microaggression comments would be like: you are too pretty to be brown or you are too articulated to be black. It is the way the dominant group communicates with ethnic minorities on a vertical line to express and strengthen their power dynamic. Colonialism started the social construction and production of race because rich white Europeans wanted to control the lands and the people that did not look like them. Colonial ideology includes the reformation of different identities, the reinforcement of white supremacist ideas through capitalism forms, and the invasion of people of color’s bodies through the notion of the superior group. The colonists see their culture as the dominant and superior one through the idea of Social Darwinist theory, so they stripped and emptied out everyone else’s values by imposing their own cultural beliefs. It is difficult to dismantle this ideology of colonialism because it has been the foundation on what America believes in. However, we must continue to challenge systemic forces and institutions that are perpetuating the notion of colonialism by changing their laws and policies. We should be in open-dialogue with other folks to spread awareness. White people should also talk to their racist friends and families about the issues that are currently happening.
