Mexican Immersion Experience Essay

Improved Essays
Based on the traditions and beliefs of the Mexican culture, I believe it would benefit me in doing my immersion experience with a Mexican family who moved to America in 1997. Why I am interested in this culture is due to visiting Cancun, Mexico back in 2011. Before this trip to Cancun, I was unaware of how involved they were in the Roman Catholic religion. Why their religion sparks my attention is because my family is Roman Catholic too. We are very religious and I desire to know how the Mexican culture practices their religion. My view point on the culture is that the mother stays home with the children while the father is the breadwinner. Due to the past research on how Mexicans view family before occupation, I wish to learn why they put

For example, Gomberg-Muñoz noticed that the relationship between a father and his children in Chicago mirrored those of families in Léon. They are very active in their children’s lives, interacting with the children at all stages of life, whether they are infants or young adults. However, they still maintain an idea of gender roles that designate the father as the provider, not someone who changes diapers and limits the father to playing and interacting more with sons than daughters. Because of the separation of families, though, these gender roles are not as rigid in households that find the father in another country working. For the mothers in Mexico, the responsibility of caring for the children is up to them entirely, with only money and perhaps moral support coming from the father because of the separation (p.…

To be able to compare the writings of Victor Villasenor with the writings of Palmer, Borgmann and Bonhoeffer, one must first gain an understanding of the familial roots that are present in most Hispanic or Mexican households. The Mexican way of thinking is a little different from the American point of view. Strictly following an authority figure, and the teachings of the Catholic Church rate very high in most families; as shown in Burro Genius (Villasenor, 2004), the family ties and what is taught generation to generation is very much at the forefront of everyday thinking. Starting with kindergarten, each day in school is a trial for little Edmundo, he is ridiculed by the teacher, endures fights almost daily with other children, and he finds it hard to remain true to his Mexican heritage, his church teaching and his familial bonds. Each day he asks Papito or God, why these things are happening to him and asks to be rescued from the trials and tribulations that occur as he grows.…

Before coming to Full Sail University, I had encountered many obstacles that tried to detour or distract me. One in particular placed a great deal of doubt in my mind and made me question was this what beyond doubt I wanted to do, or who I wanted to become. Pondering should I desert my family that is grieving over our loved one, or follow dreams that she, my grandmother, hoped I’d accomplish? With each passing day that college was approaching this complex question tore me in two. The both of you have doubts I’ve proven that neither of you grasp what computer animation can do, nor where it can lead to moreover that’s what frightens you.…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

Mothers are responsible of maintaining the household. Women in the Hispanic families encourage machismo. The husband is always in charge and is always called the “El hombre de la casa” which means “the man of the house”. However, the same story does not happen for the women in American families, because most white folks believe in equality for all, both ideologist have their place. There’s more working women in the American families than the Latino families due to Hispanic men encouraging the women to stay home and take care of the home and the kids while he works.…

    A. Get Attention: We all know that CSUN is very diverse and has many ethnic studies so we can all learn other cultures, but in Arizona Mexican-American Studies has been permanently banned. B. Reason (s) to Listen: In 2011, an Arizona law was made that targeted Mexican American Studies programs in public schools that lawmakers said “created politicized students, resentment against whites, promoted the overthrow of the U.S government, kindle ethnic resentment, and foster ethnic solidarity or treat students as members of a group.” As a Latina who is proud to have such a diverse university who also founded the nation’s first Central American studies program and one of the first Chicana/o studies programs, I was sad to hear that in a university…

Being Hispanic in the United States, to me, represents forming part of a new generation. A new generation that wants to make a change and leave behind the corruption, the ignorance and the fights found in my own country. Personally, based on my experiences, it's hard being Hispanic. Prejudice and assumptions have become part of me because society impulsed an image that is not necessarily who I am. I am Hispanic, more specifically Mexican.…

According to Becerra, “The traditional Mexican familia (“family”) meant an extended, multigenerational group within which specific social roles were ascribed to specific persons.” Which is by dividing the functions and responsibilities among different generations of family members, “la familia was able to perform all the economic and social support chores necessary for survival in the relatively Spartan life circumstances of the rural Mexican environment” (Becerra). Mexican American families usually work and live in ethnic homogenous settings, being influenced by Anglo American culture. Additionally, Mexican Americans family structures were also practiced in rural Mexico (Becerra). In the family, the male is the role of the authority figure and head of the household, then the female has the role of child bearer and nurturer, they practice traditional family roles.…

The group I chose to research was the Hispanic culture. I do not know much about the Hispanic culture nor have had much experience working with this culture. Sometimes it can be hard to work with or surround yourself with people when your cultures are not the same, therefore getting to better know the values and customs of a Hispanic will help me to make sure my clients get the most from me Knowing more about the people that I am dealing with is the best way to ensure a good client to counselor relationship. The Hispanic culture is one of the fastest growing cultural groups in the United States. The U.S. Census data indicates that Hispanics will be the largest minority group by the year 2050 (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1992).…

How can I say that Mexicans are not racist if my own family considers that a white with blue or green eyes is more beautiful than other who is not white? So, I agree that many Mexicans and also people from different ethnicity believe that the beauty comes depending on your eyes and skin color. I know that not all Mexicans are racist, that is a generalize comment, but it is very common to see white people in movies, novelas, announcements, and commercials. Even media plays an important role in people’s perspective about beauty, I think that concept goes so far than the media. It comes in how we as a parent always associate colors with the good and bad things.…

Feeling like an outsider in a place you consider home, is one of the struggles that to this day I still live with. June 8, 1996 was the beginning of the hectic journey of my life, I was only a year and three months when my mother made the decision to pack up and move to the United States, where my father had been living with my two older sibling. A small two bedroom house located in Galveston Texas is what my family would call home for the next couple of years. As the youngest child out of my four siblings, people always thought of my life to be perfect and spoiled; which in true honesty was nothing like that.…
