The Hieroglyphic word for horizon is a graphic of the sun setting along two pyramid shapes. To me, this seems like a word that was coined based on a …show more content…
She addresses the difficulties associated with teaching writing, emphasising that the process of teaching needs to be approached in a way where the student is encouraged to write in their own voice. Perhaps, to some students, writing is just another weight over their shoulders. However, this is not what writing, in your own voice, is all about. It’s much more of a personal journey where the writer and their piece become one entity. The piece can not exist without the writer, and vice versa. A generic obscure approach to writing defeats the purpose of learning writing altogether. Hence, in order for students to grasp their voices, they need to at least start communicating them to their teachers. It’s only then that teachers are able to help bring out these voices. Sommers writes “Unlike my father, I must sometimes convince my customers, my students, to take an interest in a coat whose pattern they haven't imagined.” (423, The Language of Coats) I think this is a particularly lovely metaphor in which Sommers compares her students’ voices with patterned coats. It doesn’t mean that I’m nearly half decent at writing, and I don’t think I’d say I’m terrible at it either. At the end of the day, it’s still a hassle to experience being stuck trying to find the proper word to describe something. At this point, I think I have gained the ability to write with my own voice, nonetheless. My only issue is overcoming the constant writer’s block that I deal with whenever I need to write something I’m not entirely interested in. With that being said, she makes me feel jealous of her writing ability. I truly admire her writing skills, and the way she presents her points and claims. Just like the Egyptian that created the first graphic for the horizon, I want to share my voice with the world and create my own
