My Relationship With Writing Essay

Improved Essays
I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade. However, as I entered into university as an engineering student, I learned how to properly convey my thoughts and ideas through writing and I realized how writing has such a major impact on …show more content…
In most cases, when writing these kind of reports, a great amount of math and science is required to convey your thoughts and ideas. Since my passion has always leaned towards the subjects of math and science, I have always felt more confident and successful when writing reports. Even though I occasionally find it difficult to put my thoughts on paper, the desire to communicate my findings through math and science inspires me to learn how to write clearly and properly so that my reports can be of higher quality.
I recall a time where I had to write a major technical report. One objective of this technical report was to provide pipe specifications, such as a potential steel grade, diameter and wall thickness of the pipe, that would result in the creation of an effective steel pipeline structure. I felt motivated to write this report because unlike

However, after completing this project, I felt very accomplished because I was able to communicate my research findings through writing. I also realized that I can take advantage of this experience to communicate effectively to other members of society. For instance, I can use these writing skills to write a proper resume and cover letter that will highlight my qualifications. I can also notify other employees, supervisors and clients of my progress in a project through a progress report. I now have a much greater appreciation towards writing and I realized how writing can potentially change the way we communicate to one another in every aspect of

Throughout this semester, we have written two major papers that really display my capabilities as a writer. By evaluating these two pieces with the learning outcomes established at the beginning of this semester, outcomes 1, 2, and 3 are most applicable when gauging my progress in this course. Learning outcome 1 is, "Demonstrate academic research and writing skills in essays and projects to participate in a scholarly conversation" Learning outcome 2 is, "Demonstrate critical reading through a knowledge of the forms and functions of a variety of texts" Learning Outcome 3 is, "Follow a research writing process that includes developing a topic, locating and evaluating sources (including peer-reviewed), composing in response to those sources, and revising and reflecting on that process;" Each of these outcomes I believe I have met by using them as goals when writing in and out of class. In my essay "Survivors and their Children: Examining the Holocaust's Multigenerational Effects" I discuss the impact the Holocaust has on those who survived it and on their children.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

Writing has changed my perspective on various aspects of my life. Some of the essays that I have written in the past have opened doors to new ideas. These essays have helped me make connections I feel I never would have made without writing. I believe this is because I enter my deepest level of concentration when I write. This heightened level of concentration I reach when writing has allowed me to reflect on important areas in my life such as self-awareness and motivation.…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible.…

Behind the Scenes of Letters and Words We live in a generation that relies on texting, instant messaging and social media to communicate. None of which require the proper necessities when actually writing but instead consist of abbreviation, misspelled words, lack of punctuation and the list could go on. Writing seems as if it is becoming less and less of a thing as life goes on and technology grows. The thought of writing and reading going extinct one day is a very scary view and something we should never let happen. Writing has great significance and value behind it with many different reasons for why it is so important.…

I feel that writing is a good subject to be familiar and practicing in frequently, it is a necessary tool to communicate properly. Although, if I were to be truthful I’d have to say that I am not the biggest fan of it due to the fact that it bores me and I have trouble figuring out what to say. So I find it hard to enjoy writing because most of the time I am just struggling to concentrate because I don’t have much more to say about a topic. Recently, since I have not been in school for a while, I have found myself forgetting rules to the English language in my everyday speech so I find it to be useful. This has influenced how I feel about writing because the more I write, the more easily I can remember to use these rules in my daily…

Critical reflection Reflecting back on what I have learnt about myself as a writer is that it is okay to be aware of your weaknesses and using the necessary tools to support and strengthen them. As a writer it is good to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with new genres. Let your writing take you on an emotional journey, and let your emotions lead your writing into a new journey. As a writer you need to expand your vocabulary and use powerful descriptive words to really create a mental image for your readers. I have learnt to understand the importance of sentence structure, drafting, and proof reading and not over using commas creating sentences that are too long.…

Composing Process I recently started back to school after many years of working. Although assigned writing is a little stressful for me, I am attempting to get used to it. I like to think I am a fun person to talk to, however I do not feel I am an entertaining writer by any means. Writing is a great challenge to me because writing restricts facial expressions, tone of voice and hand gestures in which I use very frequently while speaking. This poses a problem as I try to organize and arrange sentences to reflect how I would actually say them in person.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

When considering my own writing, I would say I am very capable of coming up with original ideas. My thoughts are creative, but I struggle to get all of my arguments into the essay. In my mind, I understand my thought and the reasons behind it. When I have to support claims in a written form I have a habit of sometimes leaving out a piece. I also have noticed repetitiveness and slight disorganization in the way that similar thoughts are sometimes split up throughout the essay.…
