Genocide has eight different stages as defined by Gregory Stanton, the president of Genocide Watch. These stages are used to identify, predict, prevent and stop genocides. The stages, in order, are classification, symbolization, dehumanization, organization, polarization, identification, extermination and denial. Rwanda has seen its share of turmoil and genocide due to social classification by the Belgians as they were separated into Hutu and Tutsi, which is a classification based on the size of facial features and the color of their skin.
