Marine Corps Organizational Culture Summary

The literature revealed that Marine Corps organizational culture seems to promote the categorizing of female Marines into three types of Marine: a slut, a dyke or a bitch. Some of the literature revealed that some of the women are conditioned early that they will fall into one of the stereotypes. The participants where asked “What stereotypes about female Marines have you heard of and which one is the most offensive?” For the most part male Marines chose to not respond, and opted to pass on the question, or stated that there were no stereotype. Only one male Marine responded. He stated that “There are many stereotypes. They (female Maines) are only in the corps for women job, and are there for Male Marines to have fun only.” The other male marines did not feel comfortable talking about the stereotypes. All four who passed paused (15-30 seconds) before stating that they would pass on the question or that they “could not think of any.” The …show more content…
One stated that one stereotype she finds offensive is that “That women marines are crazy, promiscuous, and quick to call rape or sexual harassment.” One female Marine responded by stating that one stereotype she finds offensive is “That we are walking mattresses, granted some women hurt our reputation. Not all women in the Marine Corps are like that. I have to prove myself every new assignment or unit I work with that I’m not that female.” The youngest of the female Marine stated that “the most offensive would be that female Marines can only sleep their way to the top.” When asked “How has the Marine Corps attempted to minimize the negative stereotypes associated with female Marines?” All five females stated that the Marine Corps has not done anything to address the stereotypes associated with being a female Marine.
