About 70% of females who served in the army during the Second World War had traditionally "women" jobs. They worked as typists, administrators, and mail sorters. Though these jobs may have been less appreciated than those of the men fighting on the front lines, women were essential in maintaining the bureaucratic mechanisms that are necessary in wartime. Participation of females in the US Armed Forces during war was a significant turning point in the relationship of women to the military service. The first reaction to the idea of recruitment met enormous resistance.…

I do, and that issue is still going on today. “Why Marines, Unlike Army and Navy, Are So Against Women in Combat” by Anna Malrine speaks of the injustice and sexist attitudes portrayed by the Marin Corps in recent discussions. Malrine is honest when she speaks of the wrongful attitudes toward women in this article, women in combat could help our marines not hurt them, women can help have a different mindset, open up areas that men can not fit in, and work with the women of the world.…

Ladies merit more regard. For a long while now, ladies have been taking part in the military, which, obviously, initially just permitted men. During the time of their interest, ladies have shown that they are pretty much as able as their male partners. A year ago was an especially critical year for female troopers as they were at long last permitted to move into legions that were in the past all male. Jena McGregor, an author for the Washington Post, kept in touch with her considerations on this chronicled accomplishment for ladies in her piece "Military Women in Combat: Why making it Official Matters.…

As a modern, growing country America has supposedly overcome ideas such as strict traditional gender roles. Author Tarak Barkawi confronts this issue as he argues we have missed an area in our United States military. His article published in 2012 titled, “Equality in Army and Society”, harshly challenges the rules and regulations in the U.S army against women’s rights. Barkawi’s main point is, women do not have the same career opportunities due to traditional roles, masculinity in the military, and civilian ideas of gender roles. Barkawi states, “the army is one of the last redoubts of traditional masculinity”.…

On 3 December 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that all branches of the military must open all combat roles to women within one year. This brings new urgency to the issue of rampant sexual assault and harassment in the U.S. military. Roughly 19,000 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen were sexually assaulted or raped last year while serving their country - that is approximately 52 cases per day. Their assailants by-and-large were other service members. Although roughly 80% of cases go unreported, those who do report often face retaliation from their units or commanding officers.…

Eventually, women in America got tired of being treated as inferior human beings. Women’s roles in the military have changed immensely throughout history, and the transitions women have made has greatly impacted militaries everywhere. Before women were allowed to join the military as soldiers, they were cooks, laundresses, spies, and, most importantly, nurses.…

Education, is the primary method to attract more women towards the military. Recruitment of women needs to be done through educating women on the career opportunities that are available. Education alone will not change women’s views on the military, strong female role models within the military are equally necessary. As of 2011 females representation is at 14.5%, yet they make up only 7.3% of general officers (Harvey and Allard, 2015, p. 230). If the military wants to attract the best and brightest soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and sailors, women need to know that the opportunities exists for success.…

(2007) mentions that women who have been sexually assaulted at a young age/childhood are more prevalent to being sexually assault, sexually harassed or having psychological problem while in active service in the military. The higher rates of Sexual assault in the military in comparison to the general civilian population seems to stem from high ranking officials not investigating cases that are reported, and instead covering it up to preserve a positive image of the military in the eye of the public, which emboldens offenders of sexual assault to act, and victimize others in the military. In order to accurately pinpoint the reasons for the prevalence of sexual assault on military women, while they are active members, feminist theory will be used. According to feminist theory there is gender inequality, and this inequality leads to discrimination, sexual objectivity, and patriarchy…

The military organized women in specialized units, with their own officers, uniforms, and with a pay which was equal to the one received by their male counterparts. But the major faced by society was the image of the American woman on the home front. For the first time in American history, the number of married working women outnumbered single working women. The war provided a place for women in the labor force, and this, along with labor laws, gave women new opportunities to grow socially and professionally (Handler, 1979). Even if the wartime opened new opportunities for women in the workforce, it also created much social tension in the American family.…
