3) The Untouchables. Those were Indians born into the lowest social class. They faced a lot of discrimination. After World War 1 took place, Gandhi was expecting for India to be granted independence from Britain. It didn’t happen and that’s when Gandhi called for strikes and other forms of civil disobedience as it was called. British hit back with violence, and Gandhi still advocated for non violent protests but eventually Indians started rioting. When Gandhi realized he could not control them he stopped his protests. He was highly criticized for his non violent solutions and was jailed many times. Yet he was positive. He was quoted saying, “In my humble opinion, non-cooperation with evil is as much a duty as is cooperation with good.” After his release he continued his protests. Eventually they were granted independence but another problem arose. How were Hindus and Muslims going to share power? Gandhi thought the same thing. Violence broke out and Gandhi spoke up. His peaceful approach has inspired many and has also taught us many lessons. Now what are those lessons? Truth and love always triumph. He achieved what he fought for despite being assassinated. Imagine what it would’ve been like if Gandhi took a violent approach. Things would’ve turned out way differently. It would’ve take way longer to achieve even just one goal. Another one is be the change you want to be in the world. Gandhi definitely took that approach. Gandhi wanted unity, so he organized protests with many. One who had different beliefs. But he demonstrated what unity looked like. But I drew some personal lessons from him too. Violence is not the answer. I know it’s a statement made many times. By teachers, parents, adults, and even on TV. But Gandhi showed it. He showed me that though violence may be easy tactic to use, it doesn’t really get us far. Peace may take a while, but it still solves problems. Wether we’re at school or at work, we can apply this. Bullying can be countered by telling someone or even telling the bully to stop. Gandhi helped me realize that there’s always other options besides using violence. I hope that more people can take Gandhi’s principles to
