Mahatma Gandhi and Osama Bin Laden; two names that can immediately make you feel at ease and then distressed by having them so close in proximity to each other. These names don’t seem to fit together and definitely don’t seem as though they should be together on the same page. Despite their obvious differences, though, they can be seen as alike in some ways. Granted, one was a man who stood up for peace while the other stood up for violence; but both of them were very successful in motivating people to act on behalf of their visions. These two very well known men were able to cause a change in the world, some extremely good and some extremely bad, both with the unfortunate end of their lives at the hand of their opposers. This was Mahatma Gandhi’s main theory on life. His main goal in life had been to end the British rule over the native Indians, but he also spent 20 years of his life protecting the rights of South African immigrants. Born on October 2nd, 1869, no one knew then what Gandhi would actually be able to accomplish in his 79 years of life. He was a man who devoted his life to peace, brotherhood, and compassion saying, “The person who uses non-violence is blessed.” He was a very humble man whose writings won him many followers. He also led by example. One of the times that he did this was when he lead thousands of Indians on a two hundred mile walk to the sea to get salt so that they would not have to pay taxes on them. Although he was a very peaceful man, though, he was arrested 3 times. This was how Osama Bin Laden was described. Born on March 10, 1957, no one knew how much havoc he would wreak all over the world. In his 54 years of life, he accumulated 6 wives bearing 21 children. During this time he also founded the Islamic terrorist group named Al-Qaeda in 1988. His main goal in life was to advance Islamic revolutions throughout the Muslim world through the use of war, bloodshed, fear, and violence. Between the years of 1991-1996, he was part of many terrorist attacks that lead to many assassinations. He is also known for bombing hotels that had many American troops inside; then, in 2004 he admitted to being behind the attack on the twin towers on September 11, 2001. On May 2, 2011, he was killed by U.S. Navy Seals who found him on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Surprisingly, Osama Bin Laden was able to gain a lot of followers. These people did things such as even killing themselves to show how devoted they were to him; for example, the suicide bombers during 9/11. Osama was a very persuasive and creative man who was able to stay under the radar for a good number of years while still causing distress and pain to the American people and people in his own country.
