Decent Essays
Mackenzie was the second prime minister of Canada. He was a hardworking, nation builder who believed in reducing British authority in Canada. During his reign, he greatly reduced the power of the governor general, created the auditor general, and Canada’s Supreme Court. He also started the Northwest Mounted Police and the Royal Military College, and helped create freer elections. Mackenzie was also an honest and honorable man who cared more about the people of his country than power and authority. However, during his reign he was cruel o certain groups living in Canada such as the Metis and the western Natives. …show more content…
Although, Mackenzie helped build many important things in Canada, his plan of free trade with the U.S. would have endangered Canada. The U.S. rejected his idea of free trade and Canada’s economy kept declining. This economic depression slowed the construction of the CPR, which was not only essential for uniting Canada but also for developing and securing it. Mackenzie’s idea of free trade with the U.S. would also make Canada very dependent on America. This would not only put Canada in danger of exploitation, but it will also make Canada rely on a country that tried to invade it and probably still wants to control

Prime Minister Mackenzie King wrote in his dairy a day after the 1930 federal election that he did not care much for his loss in the election and that he was glad to throw the responsibility of finding a solution to unemployment problems to newly elected Prime Minister, R.B Bennett. R.B Bennett who took the responsibility of Canada when it was in a great economical depression is often blamed for his inability to cope with the depression and a series of dark historical event: On-To-Ottawa Trek and the Regina Riot that followed it. However, it is clear that Prime Minister Bennett who did his best to run the country is not to blame either for the On-To-Ottawa Trek and the Regina Riot which inevitably arose out of the given situation of the…

Many political leaders, such as Ian Mackenzie, discriminated against Japanese Canadians but in August 1944, Mackenzie King said, "it is a fact no person of Japanese race born in Canada has been charged with any act of sabotage or disloyalty during the years of war." Mackenzie King was an influential leader during this time, someone who the people trusted. Moreover, he was aware of the racial discrimination that was recognizable in Canada and when he made this statement, he was clear that no Japanese Canadian had ever sabotaged or betrayed Canada. In result, the people had no reason to display discrimination against Japanese Canadians. Mackenzie King, the prime minister of Canada, had the country’s best interests in mind, yet the people in Canada continued to display racial discrimination against Japanese Canadians.…

Joe Clark defines Canada as a nation who relies on a strong, stable government. The government is what is holding our country together because of the order and strict but fair laws to follow. I ranked him as number five because as much as I agree to this, our government is in fact keeping our nation in order but it’s not as important as the diversity of our nation. I believe that the government is the skeleton of our identity while diversity is the heart. 6.…

I personally think that the prime minister holds more power than a primer. The prime minister is the head of the government in Canada and with such positions comes great power. First of all, the prime minister is the head of the governing party in the federal legislature, mean while the premier is the equivalent of that, but at a provincial level. This means that the premier is the leader of the government in his province and is also a representative of their province in the federal legislature. At the end of the day the PM is the one who call the shots and leads legislature at a federal level, a position that holds more power that the one the premier holds.…

The Stock Market Crash of 1929 that triggered the Great Depression in Canada has forever changed the country. During the 1920 's, the Canadian and the United States stock market was evaluated by the potential growth of companies and people were “invest hungry” and hardly looked at the assets because they thought that it would rise no matter what and that it was a no risk, high profit investment. It was predicted on October 24, 1929 (Black Thursday) that the market had reached an all time high and that the"bull" stock market was so high that it would be hard for it to continue rising at the same rate. Unfortunately on October 29, 1929 (Black Tuesday) the North American stock market was crashing and in a panic everyone started to sell their stocks…
